the "Journey" in Journeyman.
Most typically the areas where I choose to shoot at are in my immediate location or not to far by and they're relatively easy to get to and back if i need another day. Thats one of the reasons why I always attend any FSC event or Chibi Pa or Mizucon and others ... unless I'm oblivious to others. But like I said sometimes I can't get the whole scoop in 1 day so ok no prob go home, relax , and shower.
Last year when I had just started JMIN i felt like going big and all I had were $200 and a miniDV cam. A friend suggested we take a trip to tampa for a drifting convention , naturally i agreed. Mind you our starting point was in Miami , therefore it is atleast a 5 hour drive to tampa which, doesn't sound like a big deal but its not the distance that made the experience it was the variety of situations that did.
first off , I did not have a trunk full of money and neither did my partner. all together we made up about 300 bucks. The bill of the total trip was about 35*2 for tickets to the event +55 for food thats already 125. and because we drove around everywhere the gas bill came out to 150.
Luckily I had a cousin that let us stay the night in Tampa so room and board wasn't an issue.
2nd, SOME AHOLE CRASHED INTO MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .....but he was cool enough to cover the damages so it all worked out

and that was within 1 hour of arriving in St. Petersburg so i had to deal with a busted door the rest of the trip. (it never closed correctly afterwards)
that day everything went according to plan we went in we shot what we needed and got out. now the next problem was getting home.. and no we didn't have GPS.
we were both hype on insomnia and NOS, a popular taurine drink they were giving out at the event) we took a crateload. all we had were directions on how to get TO St.Pete but not back because we figured its the same way back anyway..... in hindsight that was a dumb train of thought. this is a map of how we eventually got home

thankfully the gas money and gas lasted us just until we reached the other coast. but as you can see we made a wrong turn into the middle of nowhere ( i thought we were on alligator alley.....NOT) the locals looked primitive and the civilization was even more primitive. everyone seemed unapproachable in a bad way so we passed on stopping for directions , I kept telling myself if we keep heading southeast we 'll eventually run into somewhere we recognize little did we know that not every road leads southeast.
and im doing all that again for metrocon 2010 T_T
All in all , its all in good fun and its part of the job. I learned amatuer videography will take you places litterally and the "journey" in Journeyman never made more sense.
If you wanna see the video we took for this event its right here
